House and Office Clearance Services FAQ’s

Why should I use a professional home or office clearance service?
You should use one if you want a highly professional, reliable, and swift service that is very competitive on price whilst most importantly, being fully licensed, insured and compliant with EU and UK legislation. You may also appreciate a professional’s commitment to delivering the most environmentally friendly clearance service available.

How is the price worked out for a clearance?
There are three factors that influence the cost. 1. The labour required. ?2. The cost of disposal and recycling of the items cleared. ?3. The resale value of the items to be cleared. Once the house clearance company have assessed the job they then calculate the price. There should be no hidden extra costs.

Why can’t I get an exact price over the phone?
Until the house or office clearance company can asses exactly how long the job will take, what if any residual value there is, and what our recycling / disposal costs are going to be a precise quote cannot be given.

Health and Safety Advisors

The roll of a health and safety advisors is varied from fire risk assessments to RIDDOR reporting.

LOLER – Your obligations as an employer
The LOLER Regulations aim to reduce risks to people’s Health and Safety from lifting equipment provided for use at work. To further complicate matters, any lifting equipment used is also subject to the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

LOLER – requirements of LOLER
The LOLER Regulations require that equipment used is strong and stable enough for the particular use and marked to indicate safe working loads, positioned and installed to minimize any risks. Unfortunately though without Health and Safety Experts in-house, it’s difficult to know where to start.

Manual Handling – Compliance through training
Have you considered what would happen if one of your employees injured themselves whilst at work? As their employer you’re likely to come under scrutiny from the HSE; they’ll ask lots of searching questions about their training and your management systems?

In 2008 over a third of all reportable injuries to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were because of manual handling related problems; but providing the appropriate level of training in house is difficult unless you have your own Health and Safety department.

Why should you book a manual handling training course with Bibby Consulting & Support?
•    We have specialist Manual Handling Trainers who deliver cost effective courses
•    You’ll be able to prove you comply with statutory legislation
•    It will help to reduce your absence levels and costs
•    Your insurance premiums can also decrease.

Manual Handling Awareness Training
Specialized health and safety advisors are able to provide you with comprehensive manual handling training to help you avoid, assess and reduce the risk to your employees. These sessions are available to run with up to 12 delegates making it highly cost effective and can be held either on your own premises or at our head office with refreshments provided.

Course Content:
•    Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
•    What is manual handling?
•    Related injuries.
•    Risk assessments.
•    Risk reduction planning.
•    Basic rules and good handling technique.
•    Risk assessment in the workplace.

Lifting and manual handling is likely to be one of the biggest risks in you work place so it’s essential to inform your staff about safe lifting and manual handling basics. Booking a Manual Handling Training course will ensure that not only are you are compliant with the Manual Handling regulations, it will also help to keep your workforce healthy and reduce absence levels and costs.

What is RIDDOR?
The RIDDOR regulations place responsibilities on employers to report certain matters to the Health and Safety Executive. The confusing thing is knowing what to report and in what time-scales.

RIDDOR – Notifying the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
If there is an accident connected with work and an employee, self-employed person, or even a member of the public are injured, then you may need to contact the HSE to advise them of the situation. However, you are then likely to come under investigation with Inspectors demanding to see your H&S Management System and not just a file on the shelf. They will want to see that it has been implemented and then will certainly want to interview your workforce.

Would you be confident that your staff would be able to confirm that they are working in line with what the Risk Assessment says?

RIDDOR Reporting
Failure to report a major injury, three day injury, reportable disease or dangerous occurrence to the HSE within 10 days can lead to prosecution. With fines running at a lower court maximum of £5000*, having a Health and Safety Management System to manage and minimise risks is essential. Consult specialized health and safety advisors for further information and advice.

WEEE Recycling Legistlations

IT recycling and IT disposal service in accordance with all UK and EU legislation should be an integral part of any business.

A professional IT recycling and IT disposal service enables you to deliver on your corporate social responsibility objects and of course all the legal requirements. The IT disposal and IT recycling service should be completely secure whilst at the same time enabling ethical and green practices to be carried out.

On collection of any waste IT equipment, a Waste Transfer Notice (WTN) is issued. This discharges the duty of care for the IT equipment from you on to the collection service provider who are the licensed waste carrier. Salvage material that can be reused before transferring the material to large facilities where redundant equipment is broken down into separate waste streams and recycled or otherwise treated.

Data protection and the proper and comprehensive destruction of data from computers and other IT equipment is critical. The waste collector should offer a full data destruction service. It is of upmost importance for all data to be destroyed irrecoverably. There are several data wiping options which are either carried out on and off site. All options are fully certified and complete data destruction documentation is provided. It is imperative this documentation gets checked out prior to when the IT recycling is taken away.

Often IT waste is still in perfectly good order but not suitable to the needs of the client anymore. When this is the case and you believe might have residual value, the IT disposal service will make you an offer or advise on the sale to third parties. They usually have extensive contacts throughout the industry and will help you maximize the value.

It isn’t just electrical waste that requires proper disposal. General waste and other types of business waste also have strict guidelines and directives which have to be followed. A professional rubbish clearance and waste disposal service will deal with all waste from stand-alone rubbish clearance/waste disposal service, or if it is part of a wide office clearance programme. All regulations will then be adhered to and you the client will be able to relax.

All the Rubbish cleared is taken to facilities with the highest rates of success in recycling. They also make sure our waste disposal service complies with all current legislation and supply you with all relevant documentation, including waste transfer notices. Confidential or sensitive waste, such as documents or branded items will be destroyed completely.

To the uninitiated compliance with the WEEE recycling directive can be confusing and at times tedious. So what is WEEE?
The ‘Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive’ became law in the UK in 2007. It covers the production, disposal and recycling of electrical equipment. It is designed to minimise the environmental impact of WEEE. As far as the waste management industry is concerned, this amounts to diverting as much as possible away from landfill through proper reuse and recycling initiatives, and ensuring that the remainder is separated from other categories of waste before being treated.

Environmentally friendly portable buildings

portable buildingsPre-owned modular buildings have been recognised by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister as being extremely environmentally friendly compared with an equivalent new manufactured building.

The reason for this is that the embodied energy required to manufacture a modular building is transportable as the embodied energy is locked within the fabric of the building. Therefore the energy contained within pre-owned modular buildings can be transported and relocated to another site. In traditional buildings this is largely lost when they are no longer required and demolished, even when the materials are re-cycled. However, with modular and portable buildings the embodied energy can be relocated along with the modules to another site.

Where a modular or portable building is relocated, with minimal alteration, the amount of energy used is less than three percent of the energy that would be required to manufacture an equivalent new building. Even when the modular building is refurbished and reconfigured internally, the energy used is no more than ten percent of the energy that would be required to create a new modular building.

The Modular and Portable Buildings Association has produced an energy performance standards document (ADL-2A) which provides supporting information and guidelines for compliance with the Government’s special considerations relating to the design and construction of modular and portable buildings.
So buying a quality pre-owned modular building not only saves you money and is an immediate solution to your accommodation needs, but it also makes a difference to the environment by recycling the embodied energy contained within the building.

Modular and portable buildings come in all different sizes including multi-story they can be used for such a wide variety of functions including mobile classrooms, temporary offices, construction site accommodation and portable storage buildings.

The World of Peter Rabbit

Peter Rabbit and Friends is a collection of books written by Beatrix Potter in the early 1900’s and popular worldwide.

Peter Rabbit and the other Beatrix Potter characters have been firm favourites with children right from 1902 when the first story was published and even now in the present day. Beatrix Potter books are known throughout the whole world and none more so than in Japan. From a very early age, Japanese children are given Beatrix Potter books to help them learn English. Their love for Peter Rabbit and the other Beatrix Potter characters is enormous and thousands of Japanese tourists flock to the Lake District to the home of Beatrix Potter and to visit the many buildings and attractions associated with her. It is really quite special that a story book has united nation’s right across the globe.

Bowness On Windermere is home to The World of Beatrix Potter attraction which is an extremely comprehensive guide to Beatrix Potter, her life and all 23 of her stories. Both indoor and outdoor activities can be experienced along with a tea room. Nearby is an official Peter Rabbit Shop selling Peter Rabbit gifts, collectables and other merchandise.

Hill Top is the most popular destination on the tour being the home of Beatrix Potter when she frequented the Lake District. Purchased in 1905 from the royalties from her first publication, Hill Top is located in Near Sawrey, Hawkshead not far from Ambleside. Hill Top is now owned by the National Trust and is a time capsule of Beatrix Potter’s life. Each room looks as though time has stood still so when walking around, you really feel as though you have taken a step back in time and imagine Beatrix Potter writing the Peter Rabbit stories.

Miss Potter, the film starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, propelled Peter Rabbit further and widened its appeal even greater. Specially arranged tours and sightseeing trips were organised by tourism operators across the Lake District to meet demand to see where Beatrix potter lived and be shown the Lake District scenery that inspired her. Attractions and local business owners in the Lake District made an effort to try and learn some Japanese phrases and even literature was translated in order to make them feel as welcome and comfortable as possible.

The nature of the Peter Rabbit characters has meant that for years now they have translated very well into soft toys, collectables and gifts whether it’s Peter Rabbit himself through to Benjamin Bunny, Miss Tiggy-Winkle or Jemima Puddleduck. Peter Rabbit clothing is also available in some very cute baby clothing designs.

UK Mailing Addresses and Parcel Forwarding How They Work

With international online shopping on the increase, consumers are realising the benefits and savings of obtaining a UK mailing address for parcel forwarding.

Shopping on the internet allows consumers to find the best priced goods. These goods however may not be available in the country they live in. International shipping of internet purchased goods is on the rise and costs can mount up. Should goods be purchased from various online shopping retailers, international shipping will be charged by each retailer.

This is where a parcel forwarding service comes in. Used by businesses and international trades for a number of years, the rise in online shopping has created a need for individual consumers to make use of such a service.

New Family Procedure Rules

A new set of family procedure rules will apply in England and Wales from the 6 April 2011.

In particular, the new set of family procedure rules effective from the 6 April 2011 will affect divorce and financial cases and extra care must always be taken where a family case has an international dimension to it.

One of the significant changes to the rule is that there is a requirement for any Applicant to first see a mediator to determine whether or not mediation is in fact suitable for the case. The difficulty is that where a case, in particular, involves European Union countries (except Denmark) then this could allow the other party i.e. the Respondent to receive advance notice of what is happening. He or she may then tactically try and claim jurisdiction in the EU country which best suits his/her case. Contacting the other party could therefore be fatal. The reason for this is that the financial outcome in the different countries could be significantly different.

All is not lost however as there are some exemptions available which could still allow a party to issue proceedings in England and Wales and therefore to claim jurisdiction in the usual way. There are mixed thoughts about this (often called the lis pendens rule) because it creates tactics and it can actually inflame a situation presently there is no real way round it because as I say to delay could be fatal where a case has an international element to it. In many none EU countries, some regard is given still as to who was first to start the proceedings and therefore it is arguable that the exemption from seeing a mediator should apply in all cases of possible foreign proceedings.

There is justifiable criticism of European Union policymakers who have created this “first to issue” rule in divorce proceedings or it can create what is often called “anti-settlement” and “anti-family life” problems. Whatever the rights and wrongs, extra care should always be taken where the case has some international dimension to it.
A divorce or separation can be a very difficult and stressful time. Not only does it affect the status of a relationship but it also has implications both in relation to the finances and any children.

Extra care must be taken where the case has an international element to it because there could be more than one country where the divorce could start. The financial outcomes in each country could be starkly different and specialist advice a divorce solicitor Cheshire must be taken in each country.

Legally, however, a divorce is a relatively straightforward procedure. There is one ground for a divorce: the marriage has irretrievably broken down.

There are five ways of showing this to a Court:
•    Adultery
•    Behaviour
•    Desertion for more than two years
•    Separation for two years or more with the other person’s consent
•    Separation for five years or more without the other person’s consent

As with many professional services such as office and house clearances, the company has years of experience and can carry out the service in a quick and efficient manner. Other services that a house clearance company normally provide are transportation, removals, waste disposal, probate valuation and antique and collectables valuations.

Buying Clothing for Babies and Children

The clothing brands specifically created for children really have got it right. Many have created the right brand name, a catchy name that children will remember. They have brightly coloured branding and maybe a quirky logo. Tags on the clothes are tactile and of course, most importantly, the clothes are fashionable, colourful and exciting.

Children are becoming more fashion conscious but do we really want our children to follow the main stream look, copying others are school and looking the same as the next child? Through the rest of their growing up we try to make their personalities grow and for them to be an individual. Dressing children can sometimes be stressful but if they like the clothes and they are fun, it makes it much easier for parents.

Some of the latest brands to be popular with both children and grownups are the following. Both being European brands and centred on fun, colour and durability:

Molo Clothing
The Molo kids and Molo baby clothes collection is becoming more and more popular in the UK. A Danish brand, Molo kids and baby clothing is always fun, unique and fantastic quality. Mismatch of patterns and colours, layering and fun prints make this collection definitely stand out from the ‘designer crowd’!

O Ring Seals Engineering Design

O rings are acceptable for static sealing but inappropriate for dynamic sealing applications such as pumps and compressors, and high and low pressure applications.

In cases where dynamic sealing applications are required such as pumps and compressors, and high and low pressure applications, a single elastomer may be used with an X-ring profile to prevent twisting in rotary applications. However a composite seal design is often preferred.

A composite seal is a combination of two or more materials to produce a seal that offers the best attributes of both materials. For example, a T-shaped seal comprises an elastomer T-shaped component and two plastic back up rubber o rings. The seals are used in reciprocating piston, rod and rotary applications. The T-shaped design prevents the elastomer rolling and the plastic back-up rings, energised by the rubber elastomer, provide improved high pressure performance. Importantly the T-seals can be installed into standard O-ring grooves. Other standard composite seal designs include spring reinforced seals, encapsulated seals, lip seals, energised lip seals and cap seals.

The Lake District has faced some very challenging times in the past decade in fact it is 10 years ago since the outbreak of foot and mouth this year and more recently, the 2009 floods. It isn’t easy for hotels in the Lake District especially around highly popular areas such as Keswick. Keswick attracts around 1.5 million visitors a year which is a huge amount so consequently it is highly concentrated with bed and breakfast establishments and hotels.

VW Camper Van Hire in the Lake District

vw camper hireWeek off work…check, beautiful vistas required, the English Lake District…check, want to see as much as possible, camper van…check!

With such vast, varied and breathtaking scenery as in the Lake District, it is far too difficult a task choosing one destination for a holiday or short break. Great driving roads+breathtaking scenery=the perfect recipe for camper vans.

Camper vans give you:
The opportunity to visit and experience numerous locations in one trip.
Give you the freedom to stop off when and where you like and for what duration.
No need to worry about there not being a hotel or guest house available in the area.
You are protected from the elements unlike camping.

You’ll never tire of driving on the roads in the Lake District and Cumbria which has some of the most scenic roads in England. In particular, Hartside Pass which The AA and Top Gear list in their top 10 driving roads in England. Other great driving roads include the Kirkstone Pass, the A591 which passes through Ambleside, Grasmere and onto Keswick and not for the faint hearted Hardnott and Wrynose passes.
VW camper vans are particularly suited to the roads in the Lake District. They are compact and allow you to drive on the stunning, narrow roads which other, larger camper van and mobile homes would not be able to.

Camper vans have seen a renaissance in recent years both in terms of new camper vans and mobile homes but especially the popularity of the classic VW camper van. Their iconic status continues to grow and excite young and old. Driving around in the VW camper van is guaranteed to turn heads and makes a holiday even more special.

A mobile holiday is the ultimate in economical holidaying. The cost of parking up on a camping or caravanning site is nominal and sometimes areas can be found that are free. You can self cater as much of the meals as you wish although the Lake District has some fantastic eating houses that really should be visited.

Many people simply can’t justify purchasing a VW camper van for themselves due to lack of annual leave and other commitments. A camper van has to be used regularly both for economy and for the wellbeing of the van. The perfect solution is in the form of hiring. VW camper van hire is now available in the Lake District and enables those who want to experience a camper van holiday but that do not want to purchase one. Volkswagen camper van hire is also great for those thinking of purchasing a van to gain knowledge of driving one. VW Camper van hire in the UK, sorted.

Trust proves cutting energy use isn’t just a lot of hot air

Industrial Air Power Ltd is the authorised distributor for Ingersoll Rand Industrial Technologies products throughout Wales and the South West of England. The two companies have made a dramatic shift from being suppliers of equipment to providers of solutions. We are fully conversant with all aspects of air generation and equipped to carry out energy audits on any installed system, regardless of size or manufacturer.

A full system audit includes leak detection, measurement of energy consumption, and flow measurement including pressure, temperature and final air quality.

As utility rates continue to rise and firms continue to look to green initiatives, energy consumption has become a growing concern for manufacturers.

One of the largest energy users within a plant is the compressed air system. Energy recovery provides a cost-effective way for manufacturers to reduce their energy bills while simultaneously benefiting the environment by capturing the thermal energy created through the compression process and putting it to work. Where the heat produced from a compressor can be fully utilised, simple payback periods of less than two years are frequently achieved.

Having already worked with Carbon Trust on a variety of projects, Terram called on its expertise when faced with rising energy costs. The specialist manufacturer of geosynthetic materials, employing 95 staff at its manufacturing plant near Pontypool, worked with Industrial Air Power to eliminate energy inefficiencies and redesign and install a new air compressor system. The result was an industry best in terms of energy usage and savings of £202,000 per annum. It also produced:

* Energy savings of approximately 11.25 million kWh over five years
* Cost savings of approximately £1m in five years
* Emission savings of 7,390 tonnes CO2 in the same period
* Payback of approximately 24 months

David Roberts, control engineer at Terram Ltd, said: “The savings we are seeing now are unbelievable but just as important is the fact that we are reducing our carbon emissions and therefore benefiting the environment.”

Although Terram had already started to investigate the costs for new compressed air systems, it hadn’t looked at where, when, how much air was being used. Carbon Trust helped it identify this and used Industrial Air Power to design a system to meet its needs.

Having a tailor-made system installed in turn allowed Terram to capitalise on secondary savings such as heat recovery and compressed air leak reduction.

Ongoing monitoring of the fully automated system allows the savings to be quantified. Monitoring also ensures that the focus on savings is maintained and remains a high priority for Terram.

The new compressor system was located into the steam boiler house. This enabled Terram to recover the waste heat generated by the compressors and use this to raise the temperature of the water in the hot well, which feeds the boiler. Increased water temperature in turn reduces the amount of gas needed to generate steam.

The aggregated savings from the installation of the new system and implementation of the measures identified represented an 11.8 per cent reduction in the site’s energy consumption and overall a 38.7 per cent reduction in the electrical energy consumption directly associated with the generation of the compressed air.

An annual CO2 saving of 1,214 tonnes has been achieved plus an additional 264 tonnes from a reduction in gas usage due to the heat recovery process.

From monitoring the system, it was calculated that Terram was using on average 85m3/min of compressed air with an efficiency of 8kW/m/min, which equated to 7.2 million kWh per annum. By installing a new compressor set supplied by Industrial Air Power, it was calculated that the efficiency could be improved to 6kW/m3/min. Post-installation monitoring has proved that the new machinery provides an average efficiency of 5.8kW/m3/min – delivering significant savings. The gas savings are on top of this.

The benefits to Terram have been fourfold: a significant reduction in energy costs, the ability to protect plant integrity, reduced maintenance cost and the added benefit of reduced gas consumption from the increased water temperature in the steam boiler hot well.

Installing new Ingersoll Rand two stage fixed speed compressors along with a Nirvana two stage trim compressor, fully automated via a control system provided Terram with primary energy savings. Secondary savings came as a result of the heat recovery process, lower maintenance costs and the leak reduction programme.

The exercise has been successful in achieving reductions of CO2 emissions and the overall costs of supplying the service of compressed air to the business.

A Carbon Trust Wales consultant worked together with Industrial Air Power and Terram engineers providing impartial, independent advice enabling the company to make an informed decision and deliver value for money. Carbon Trust independently validated the energy savings and confirmed that they exceeded Industrial Air Power’s initial projections.

Through our experience in carrying out hundreds of compressed air audits we have identified the majority of existing compressed air systems include one or more of these deadly sins. This will have and adverse affect on your reliability, productivity and energy consumption.

* System over-pressurisation resulting in increased artificial demand
* Excessive waste through air leakage
* False loading of compressors due to lack of system automation and volume
* Inefficiency caused by cycling fixed output air compressors
* Excessive pressure drop

Fruiting Hedges in your Garden?

Have you ever considered fruiting hedging plants for your garden? Strangely not a common choice but one that is highly decorative, wildlife friendly and produces luscious fruit.

Plants that form effective hedges with the added bonus of ornamental fruits are well worth considering when planting a hedge. Fruiting hedges are often both colourful and popular with wildlife, especially birds. Evergreen Berberis, Pyracanthas, Cotoneasters and Hollies all have persistent foliage and highly ornamental fruits whereas raspberries and loganberries have the added benefit of edible fruits.

Mixed Native hedges provide a bounty of seeds, fruits and rose hips for wildlife, with a wide ranging mix of native hedge species these fruits are borne in succession through the seasons maximising the conservation value of the hedge. A number of native hedging plants produce edible fruits including Elder, Hazel, Quickthorn (Hawthorn) and Blackthorn. The most ‘wildlife friendly’ hedges are those with the widest possible mix of native hedging shrubs. Ideally the hedge should be quite wide and the vegetation at the hedge base should be left ‘rough’ to widen the corridor. This corridor is used by wildlife to get from one destination to another safely and protected. The fruits and flowers on the hedging are then the perfect food sources for the small animals. Couple the corridor layout with a wealth of food sources and your garden will be a haven for a some of the 350 different wildlife species that inhabit and use hedging.

Dee Beale – New to Design Supremo

scandinavian red hare wall artDee began her career as a graphic designer working in design studios for over 10 years. She began printmaking 3 years ago and is now a full time print maker hand printing all her own work from her small printmaking studio in the Peak District Derbyshire.

Many things including nature, animals and plant forms inspire her work. She also loves the pattern and colour of vintage Scandinavian folk art that is often reflected in her work.

At the moment most of her prints are produced on a Japanese Print Gocco. Print Gocco is small self-contained tabletop screen-printing machine first produced in Japan in the 1970s. The process is very similar to screen-printing and at one time a Print Gocco was found in most Japanese homes.

Dee has exhibited in a small selection of UK galleries and currently has a selection of her prints published on note cards by Attic Art Publishing London.

Design Supremo supply limited edition prints, art posters, wall art and screen prints.
